Must know

The practical realities that matter once you land.

Key note 01

Payments and apps

  • Set up Alipay and WeChat Pay before departure.
  • Carry one backup bank card and a small amount of cash.
  • Alipay and WeChat Pay official guides are worth reading in advance.

Key note 02

Connectivity

  • Google Maps, Google Translate, and some western travel sites may be blocked or unreliable in China.
  • Prepare a VPN before departure if your group depends on western apps.
  • Test that VPN in Portugal, not after arrival.

Key note 03

Maps inside China

  • Use this site for overview planning, not street-level navigation.
  • Amap is usually more useful inside China than western map tools.
  • Keep hotel names and addresses saved in both English and Chinese if possible.

Key note 04

Packing for January

  • Warm coat, thermal layer, scarf, gloves, and real walking shoes.
  • Waterproof outer layer for Chengdu, Chongqing, and the Zhangjiajie section.
  • Compact power bank and offline copies of important bookings.

Booking essentials

Keep the route simple and avoid the bookings most likely to become annoying later.

Trip shape

  • Fly into Beijing and out of Shanghai to avoid backtracking.
  • Use high-speed rail for Beijing -> Xi'an -> Chengdu -> Chongqing.
  • Keep Zhangjiajie transfers and the Shanghai flight simple and pre-booked.

Beijing

Tian'anmen Square and Wangfujing Area

6 Jan - 11 Jan

Best short-stay first-timer base for the Forbidden City, Tiananmen, Wangfujing food runs, and strong metro access while the group settles into China.

Xi'an

Bell Tower / Drum Tower / City Wall

11 Jan - 13 Jan

The old-city core is the easiest base for a short Xi'an stop, keeping the wall, Bell Tower, and Muslim Quarter all within easy reach.

Chengdu

Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li

13 Jan - 15 Jan

This is the easiest first-time Chengdu base for food, nightlife, shopping, and simple metro connections without losing the relaxed city feel.

Chongqing

Jiefangbei / Hongyadong

15 Jan - 17 Jan

Best first-time base for skyline energy, river views, Hongyadong, and the easiest way to feel the city fast on a short stop.

Zhangjiajie

Wulingyuan / National Forest Park

17 Jan - 20 Jan

For this itinerary the mountain section matters most, so staying near Wulingyuan makes early park starts and easier scenic-day logistics worth it.

Shanghai

People's Square / Nanjing Road

20 Jan - 22 Jan

Best first-time final-stop base for the Bund side of Shanghai, easy metro movement, shopping, and clean last-day logistics.
